What if I haven't been to church in a long time?

Not a problem! In fact, we don’t care if you have never been to church. Each weekend, many people visit Ascension for the first time. Our worship services are easy to follow and don’t require that you have any past church experience.

What if I am not Lutheran?

While Ascension is a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, we are open to all people seeking to grow in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Being Lutheran isn’t nearly as important as simply having a heart to seek Christ. If you want to learn more about Lutheran doctrine, that’s an option. But it’s certainly not a requirement for attending. 

What can I expect when I come to Ascension?

The worship service usually begins with a welcome and announcements.  You will find a variety of music depending on which service you attend.  Saturday 5:00pm and Sunday 8:00am will have more hymns and liturgical elements which are led by our organist.  9:30am our pianist will lead us with a mixture of praise songs and hymns and less liturgical elements.  11:00am is our contemporary service that utilizes guitars, drums, keyboards and worship leaders. Each worship service will have a message (approximately 20 minutes) from one of our pastors or deacons.  Because we project our services on screens, you will find the worship service as well as the outline of the sermon available and easy to follow.  You will find that there are times when dramas will be used to illustrate that day’s message. Each service will have the celebration of The Lord’s Supper and baptisms when requested. The pastor will pray during service, but you may also receive individual prayer after the service if needed.

What should I wear?

Wear what you feel is comfortable and appropriate. We do not have a dress code and we certainly wouldn’t want you to worry about this! Some people wear jeans and t-shirt, while others come in "business casual” attire. Some people prefer to dress up, while others prefer to dress down. We are more concerned about your heart and your needs than we are about your clothing.

Is there something for my kids?

Absolutely! At each worship service we have a time where the children are invited forward for a message just for them (We also know that our older children, adults, also listen in). We have an awesome Sunday School at 9:30am. We offer a FUN Bible learning experience for 2-year-olds & parents and from 3-year-olds through 8th Grade (the kids are in age-specific groups). 

For the littlest tykes, we have a nursery with a loving, qualified staff, and a cry room where parents can stay with their child as well be involved in the worship service.  This area is also available for nursing mothers. All of these areas are safe with age-appropriate toys.

What if I want to receive Holy Communion?

Baptized adult Christians who know they need God’s daily forgiveness, who are sorry for their sins and seek God’s forgiveness, and who believe that the body and blood of Jesus Christ are truly present in the Lord’s Supper are invited to share this great gift of God with us.

Jesus called us to celebrate Holy Communion until He returns so that we may have forgiveness of sins, strengthening of faith, and the power to live God-pleasing lives.

God’s Word tells us that when we receive the Lord’s Supper, we are not merely receiving bread and wine, but the true, real body and blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 26:26-30, "This is my body… this is my blood;” not "this represents my body” or "this symbolizes my blood.”

Grape juice is located in the inner ring of the Communion tray for those who prefer its use.  Please inform the server of your preference of grape juice by raising your index finger.  Gluten free wafers are also available for those who are intolerant to gluten.  Again we ask that you raise your index finger to indicate your preference

I am struggling with some personal problems. Is help available?

Yes. Many people, including Christians, face challenges in their personal and family lives. These can include addictions, marital problems, financial crises, abuse, depression, divorce, deaths of loved ones, physical trauma, and emotional problems. We want to support you and encourage healing in your life however possible. It is admirable and courageous to recognize that you need support in sorting out life's difficulties.

You may request to meet with one of our pastors to discuss your problem in confidence. We also have small groups that can be a support during those difficult times of life. Ascension also works closely with respected Christian counseling services in the Tucson community and would be happy to make a recommendation to you.

How do I find out what's going on at Ascension?

One great way to find out what is going on is to check out our calendar and news & events in the Messenger that you receive upon walking into the church. You also can visit our our NEWS page on our website www.ascensiontucson.org for more information. We also invite you to call the church office, 297-3095 and talk with any of our staff who will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.

How do I get involved?
